What to know first

01

One card per traveler

The safest choice is for each person to use a separate card. Paying for a group with one card can limit transfer discounts, especially when connecting to the subway.

02

Tap out, even on your final bus

Tap when getting off even if you will not transfer. A missed exit tap can cause an extra fare or break your next transfer discount.

03

Check your AREX train type

Transit cards work on the All-Stop Train. The reserved-seat Express Train between the airport and Seoul Station needs a separate ticket.

04

When in doubt, call 1330

Call 1330 for multilingual travel and transport help, 112 for police, or 119 for fire and ambulance.

05

Carry Korean won for reloads

Many transit-card sellers and reload machines do not accept foreign-issued cards. Carrying Korean won cash is the most reliable option.

06

Register a birth date if under 18

To receive child or youth public-transport fares, register the cardholder’s date of birth at a convenience store when buying the card.

07

When can a child ride for free?

In many cities, including Seoul and Daegu, children under age 6 ride city buses and urban rail free when accompanied by an adult guardian. Check separate rules for children traveling alone, KTX, airport, express, and intercity buses.

How to get the transfer discount

  1. 1

    Use the same transit card

Tap the same eligible card when you board and when you get off.

  2. 2

Check the time after tapping off

The local transfer window usually starts from your exit tap.

  3. 3

    Board the next eligible service

Transfer within the limit and check route, count, and operator restrictions.
